Just Bite Me vs After Bite
After Bite and Just Bite Me are both topical itch products for insect bites. They are not the same formula. After Bite is a liquid, usually ammonia or sodium bicarbonate. Just Bite Me is a solid stick of beeswax, coconut oil, and baking soda. Neither prevents bites, and neither treats an infection or a severe allergic reaction.
This comparison is for people searching After Bite, After Bite Advanced, and alternatives. It uses the ingredient lists on the product labels. It is not medical advice, and it is not a claim that one product works better in a clinical trial. We make Just Bite Me. The facts below are label facts, not a ranking.
After Bite ingredients
“After Bite” is a brand with more than one formula. Check the tube you have.
- After Bite Original (many markets): ammonia solution, often about 3.5%, in a liquid applicator. Some labels also list alcohol ethoxylate, mineral oil, dimeticone, and water. The ammonia smell is normal for this version.
- After Bite Advanced (U.S. label): sodium bicarbonate 5% as the active skin protectant. Inactive ingredients listed on DailyMed include ammonia, glycerin, and purified water. It is still a liquid pen, not a cream.
After Bite is not hydrocortisone. If a label says hydrocortisone, that is a different product. For when a 1% steroid cream fits, see hydrocortisone cream for mosquito bites.
Just Bite Me ingredients
Just Bite Me is a solid stick. The formula is wintergreen oil, lemongrass oil, baking soda, beeswax, and coconut oil. There is no ammonia and no hydrocortisone. Baking soda is the same family of ingredient as the sodium bicarbonate in After Bite Advanced, but the base is a balm, not a liquid.
After Bite vs Just Bite Me
| After Bite Original | After Bite Advanced | Just Bite Me | |

When to use After Bite
After Bite makes sense if you already like a liquid pen and the smell does not bother you. The original formula is built around ammonia as a counter-irritant. Advanced is built around sodium bicarbonate, with ammonia still in the inactive list. Follow that tube’s label: external use only, keep it out of eyes and mouth, and do not use it on a child under 2 unless a clinician says so.
Stop and get advice if the skin reaction gets worse, lasts more than about a week, or you are allergic to ammonia. Swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, or trouble breathing, is an emergency. A bite pen will not treat that.
When to use Just Bite Me
Just Bite Me makes sense if you want a solid stick in a bag, glove box, or kids’ kit, and you want to skip ammonia. Press a thin layer on intact skin. It is meant to calm the itch of mosquito bites, chiggers, and similar outdoor irritation. It is not a steroid, and it will not clear an infection.
If you only want the baking soda step and you are at a sink, a paste works too. The recipe is on baking soda for mosquito bites. For a wider set of non-steroid options, see natural bug bite itch relief.
What neither product does
- Neither keeps mosquitoes or chiggers off you. That is a repellent job, such as DEET or picaridin, used as the label says.
- Neither replaces hydrocortisone when a clinician wants a short course of 1% cream on a red, swollen bite.
- Neither is a treatment for cellulitis, a severe allergy, or a bite you cannot identify.
Chigger itch along a sock line is a different pattern from a single mosquito bite. Home care for that is on chigger bite relief. To see what is active near you this week, use the bug bite forecast.
Where to buy
After Bite is sold by its own brand and in many pharmacies. Just Bite Me is sold at retailers listed on where we sell, and from justbiteme.com. Pick the one whose ingredients and format you actually want in the bag. If you are unsure about a child’s skin or a worsening bite, ask a clinician before you choose either.
FAQ
Is After Bite the same as hydrocortisone?
No. After Bite Original is an ammonia liquid. After Bite Advanced lists sodium bicarbonate 5% as the active ingredient. Hydrocortisone is a separate steroid cream.
Does After Bite contain ammonia?
The original formula uses ammonia as the active ingredient. Advanced lists ammonia as an inactive ingredient next to sodium bicarbonate, glycerin, and water. Read the tube, because the formulas differ.
What is a natural alternative to After Bite?
A baking soda balm is the closest everyday alternative if you want to avoid ammonia. Just Bite Me is one of those sticks. A kitchen paste is another. “Natural” does not mean it treats every bite.
Which is better for kids?
Neither label is a reason to skip a clinician for babies or broken skin. After Bite labels generally say ages 2 and up. A solid stick can be easier to control than a liquid, but the right choice is the one your child’s skin tolerates and a clinician is fine with.
