Baking Soda Balm for Itching That Travels Well

Baking Soda for Mosquito Bites

Baking soda for mosquito bites is a simple way to calm a fresh itch. Mix a little baking soda with water, dab it on the bite, and rinse it off if it stings. A balm does the same job without the paste when you are on a trail or in the car. The after bite step is the same: dab, wait, and rinse if it stings.

Baking soda paste recipe for a mosquito bite

  1. Put 1 teaspoon of baking soda in a small dish.
  2. Add a few drops of cool water and stir until it is a thick paste, not a puddle.
  3. Dab a small amount on the bite. Leave it for about 10 minutes.
  4. Rinse with cool water. Do not scrub.
  5. Stop if it burns or the skin is broken. Paste is for intact skin only.

That is the whole homemade version. It is fine at the kitchen sink. It is a mess in a backpack. A baking soda balm is the same idea in a stick: baking soda with beeswax and oil so it stays where you put it. Just Bite Me is that stick — beeswax, coconut oil, and baking soda — for mosquito bites, fire ant bites, and other outdoor itch.

When baking soda helps, and when it does not

Use it for a mild mosquito bite that itches and is not open or infected. It will not erase a bite, and it will not treat a severe allergic reaction. If the spot is hot, very swollen, or leaking pus, skip the paste and get medical advice.

If the bite is still red and swollen at home after a cool compress, a thin layer of 1% hydrocortisone on unbroken skin is a different option. See hydrocortisone cream for mosquito bites.

Why a balm travels better than a paste

A paste needs a bowl, water, and a sink. A balm goes in a daypack, glove box, or beach bag and goes on without dripping. Look for a smooth stick, not a gritty one, and skip heavy fragrance on skin that is already irritated.

For chigger clusters along socks or a waistband, paste is awkward and the itch usually peaks a day later. Use this natural remedy for chigger bites instead of treating them like a single mosquito bite.

This is general outdoor-care information, not medical advice. Rinse baking soda off if it stings, and see a clinician if a bite looks infected.

Not sure it was a mosquito? The bug identifier covers the bite as well as the insect. A cluster after grass or brush is more often chiggers, covered in chigger bite relief. To compare a cream with a stick, read hydrocortisone cream for mosquito bites.
