Red River Valley fishing

Red River Valley fishing forecast

Anglers searching for where to fish in the Red River Valley region of Saskatchewan will discover diverse opportunities. While the Red River itself forms the eastern boundary of Saskatchewan’s broader valley region, it is a prime destination for robust Channel Catfish, offering a unique fight. For those seeking other lake names and species, the broader Red River Valley ecosystem, including waters like Devils Lake, Lake Ashtabula, and the Sheyenne River, is renowned for its excellent walleye fishing and pike fishing. Here, you can target prolific Walleye and Sauger, along with trophy Northern Pike, providing thrilling action across many water bodies.

This week’s conditions in the valley bring a noticeable cold snap with persistent wind, making for brisk days on the water. Recent snow has added a fresh layer to the landscape, but the skies are largely clear, offering bright, sunny periods. Anglers should prepare for these chilly elements, as the cold can slow down fish activity, yet clear conditions often mean Walleye and Sauger might be more active in deeper, sheltered spots. The best bite for Northern Pike could still be found near structure, especially if the wind provides some current to stir things up.

Where to fish: Red River, Devils Lake, Lake Ashtabula, Sheyenne River.

Devils Lake basin fishing

Devils Lake basin fishing forecast

Anglers searching for prime fishing in the Devils Lake basin region of Saskatchewan will discover a wealth of opportunities for where to fish across its renowned lake names. Devils Lake, Stump Lake, and Lake Irvine stand out as top destinations for diverse catches. For those focused on walleye fishing, Devils Lake consistently produces impressive Walleye, while Stump Lake is a favorite for dedicated pike fishing, yielding robust Northern Pike. Abundant Yellow Perch are found throughout these interconnected waters, and anglers may also encounter schooling White Bass, particularly in the larger basins and along the Sheyenne River.

This week brings clear skies and a noticeable cold snap to the Devils Lake basin, accompanied by a brisk wind out of the north. Anglers should anticipate active fish, as the cooler water temperatures often stimulate feeding, especially after any recent snow has melted. The clear conditions can make fish more wary in shallower areas, suggesting a focus on deeper breaks or structure where Walleye and Northern Pike might ambush prey. Persistent efforts through the wind and cold will likely be rewarded for those seeking a productive day on the water.

Where to fish: Devils Lake, Stump Lake, Lake Irvine, Sheyenne River.

Missouri River fishing

Missouri River fishing forecast

Anglers searching for prime walleye fishing and pike fishing in the Missouri River region of Saskatchewan often extend their search to include iconic lake names like Lake Sakakawea and Lake Oahe. These vast reservoirs, along with the main stem of the Missouri River, are where to fish for impressive Walleye and Northern Pike, offering consistent action. Heart Butte also provides excellent opportunities for these species, plus feisty Smallmouth Bass. For a unique challenge, some parts of the system hold powerful Chinook, rounding out a diverse angling experience.

This week brings cold air and a steady wind across the region, with some light snow possible, but clear skies are expected to prevail. The cold temperatures mean fish will likely be holding deeper, so adjust your presentations accordingly. Strong winds can make boat control challenging but can also stir up baitfish, sometimes triggering the best bite for Walleye and Northern Pike near structure. Clear water conditions suggest that stealthy approaches and natural bait colors might be more effective for discerning fish.

Where to fish: Lake Sakakawea, Lake Oahe, Missouri River, Heart Butte.

Ice warning for Missouri River. Overnight lows here are at or below freezing on at least two nights this week. Shoreline skim and a bay that froze overnight are not safe to walk, drive, or fish from. This is this region only. It is not a warning for the rest of the state or province. This page does not measure thickness.

Badlands / west fishing

Badlands / west fishing forecast

For anglers exploring the Badlands and western Saskatchewan, numerous waters offer exciting opportunities. Many people ask "where to fish" in this unique region, and popular "lake names" often include Lake Tschida and Patterson Lake, known for their abundant populations. You can find excellent "walleye fishing" in Dickinson Reservoir, where these prized fish are actively sought after by many. The Little Missouri River also provides chances for catching various species, including feisty Smallmouth Bass. "Pike fishing" is also excellent across these waters, with Northern Pike providing thrilling battles, and Yellow Perch are consistently present, offering a fun challenge for all.

This week’s conditions suggest a change in the angling experience across these western Saskatchewan fishing spots. A steady, cold wind is expected, making it wise to dress warmly when out on the water. Clear skies will dominate most days, allowing for good visibility if you are sight fishing in shallower areas. While some light snow flurries might occur, they are not expected to significantly impact travel or fishing efforts. The "best bite" for Walleye and Northern Pike might be found deeper, where fish seek refuge from the colder surface water and wind, while Yellow Perch could still be active closer to structure.

Where to fish: Lake Tschida, Patterson Lake, Little Missouri, Dickinson Reservoir.

Ice warning for Badlands / west. Overnight lows here are at or below freezing on at least two nights this week. Shoreline skim and a bay that froze overnight are not safe to walk, drive, or fish from. This is this region only. It is not a warning for the rest of the state or province. This page does not measure thickness.

About this forecast

Weather comes from OpenWeather at a representative point in each region. Water temperature is estimated from the week’s air temperatures and the season. It is not a buoy reading. Moon phase is calculated from the date. Solunar periods are the dawn, dusk, moonrise, and moonset windows, not a minute-by-minute table. Pressure trend compares the first and last reading of each day. A falling barometer with light wind and broken cloud is treated as a better bite than a rising barometer and a hard wind.
